Aquaculture has been identified as one of Maine’s economic sectors poised for significant growth. To capitalize on this potential growth, a number of organizations have come together to develop a strategy to help attract new investment to Maine in this sector. Funded by FocusMaine - a private-sector led initiative dedicated to developing and growing the agriculture, aquaculture, and biopharma sectors within the state - public and private organizations within Maine are working together to implement this new strategy that will lead to new aquaculture investment in Maine.

With significant competitive advantages that include high quality aquatic environments, proximity to large markets, significant working waterfront infrastructure, and world class aquaculture research facilities and expertise, Maine is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the tremendous market opportunity for high-quality, healthy, and safe seafood. Although the Maine aquaculture sector is diverse and has experienced significant growth in the last ten years, Maine is increasingly competing with other jurisdictions for investment from large scale aquaculture companies.

This targeted economic development position will lead efforts to attract new leading aquaculture firms as well as to help expand existing aquaculture companies and industry investment to Maine through a public/private partnership between FocusMaine, Maine & Company (Maine & Co,), The Maine Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD), The Maine Aquaculture Association (MAA), and The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI).

This position, employed by Maine & Company https://maineco.org/  will coordinate closely with the project partners to proactively help to grow the aquaculture sector.  In conjunction with an oversight team, the individual will develop a Maine aquaculture recruitment strategy and associated recruitment collateral.  Significant domestic and international travel for recruitment trips is required.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced marketer; energetic, highly motivated, creative, and an outstanding communicator.  A fundamental understanding of business formation and proven track record of successful business development and relationship building is a must.  Knowledge of Maine’s aquaculture sector and aquaculture-specific business formation is a plus. The individual must be a team player that is comfortable operating both independently and as part of a team.

All applications are being collected by GMRI and will be reviewed by the FocusMaine Partners.
